A visit to the Mastic Museum of Chios is essential. Here you will have the opportunity to see the unique history of mastiha and mastic trees cultivation. You will discover the way that mastiha marks the history of the island through the centuries. The Mastic Museum is only 3 km away from our hotel Emporios Bay.
The museum is a real architectural jewel. It’s surrounded by mastic trees in perfect harmony with the natural environment and its surroundings. The Chios Mastic Museum intends to highlight the productive history of the cultivation and processing of mastiha.
The mastiha gum is secreted by lentisk mastic trees. The trees are drawn with great caution («embroidery»). After 15 days they gather mastiha from the field. It then, passes various cleaning and screening stages to separate it according to size. The possibilities of its use are many especially in confectionery, liquor and cosmetics.
By visiting the museum you will experience the traditional cultivation of mastic. You will admire the history and the culture through a multifaceted experience. Also, you will see, touch and smell the mastic. You will understand the architecture, the history and the social organization of Mastihohoria, the Mastic Villages. Finally, you will understand the importance of mastiha and the ways in which today it travels around the world.
You will experience it through multimedia, documentary films, models and original machines in operation. Also, through the outdoor exhibition, where you will see the mastic trees.
